Pediatric

Compounding pharmacies can have a huge impact on pediatric patients just by making the medicine they have to take every day taste better.  An otherwise bitter-tasting medicine could turn into a pleasurable experience when it tastes like cherry vanilla, chocolate raspberry, bubblegum, or even tutti fruitti. The flavoring options are endless.
Many times a commercially available drug is only approved in a tablet form; therefore, making it difficult to administer to a toddler or infant.  The tablet could be crushed and incorporated into a flavored suspension or the raw powder form of the drug could be used instead.  The need to compound might also arise when the tablet form is too high of a dose for a child; therefore, a liquid preparation of the drug would allow the physician to prescribe the exact amount.  There may also be instances when a suppository or a lollipop might be a better dosage form.  Patient compliance is the biggest issue that can be overcome by working with your physician and compounding pharmacist.

Other possible compounded medicines for pediatrics may include:

  • Diaper rash cream
  • Psoriasis and eczema medications
  • Pediatric suppositories
  • Baby pacifier medication delivery system
  • Medicated lollipops and gummies
